Digital Services Lab Tech Tips #2: Ending A Task & Burning A Disc

Posted by Chris Day on May 15, 2007

The Digital Services Lab is proud to present our second in a series of tips, hints, and brief tutorials for using the Macintosh and Digitization Resources in Phillips Memorial Library. To view the other Tech Tips in this series click here

Mac’s version of CTRL-ALT-DEL (Ending a Task)
When using one of our iMac computers, the easiest way quit out of a frozen program is by simultaneously pressing the COMMAND (apple key)-OPTION-ESC keys.  A window will appear select the frozen application and then select Force Quit.

Force Quit can also be found under the Apple menu (top left-hand side of screen).

Easy CD OR DVD Burning on a Mac
Did you know you can burn a CD quickly by dragging your files onto the CD icon and then hitting burn?  Here’s how:

  1. Insert a blank CD (or DVD) into the disc drive. The Macintosh can burn to CD-R and CD-RW discs and DVD-R, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL discs
  2. Add files you want to burn onto the blank disc by dragging them over from the desktop onto the disc icon. No actual files will be moved; the computer will only create “Aliases”, linking the files from their location to the burn disc. You can tell they are aliases by the small arrow icon at the bottom-left side of the icon.
  3. To Burn the CD, double click on CD icon.  The CD’s finder window will open. Either click the “Burn” button in the upper-right corner or click the Yellow-&-Black circle next to the disc icon in the left-hand pane of the window.
  4. A window will open asking “Are you sure you want to burn the contents of “Untitled CD” to a disc?” Here you can:
    • Name the disc in the Disc Name field
    • Change the Burn Speed; please leave set to the default
  5. You are now ready to click the Burn button to create your disc.

The Digital Services Lab is located in Room 110, in the rear of the main floor of Phillips Memorial Library. We are open Mon-Thur 10am-9pm, Fri 8:30am-4:30pm, and Sun 5-9pm. Feel free to stop by if you have any questions about the Library’s Macintosh, Scanner, or other Technology Resources.
