Still time to give Trial Databases a spin…

Posted by Beatrice Pulliam on February 22, 2007

There is still time to try the over 60 trial databases we have available via the HELIN library consortium. The databases list is in alphabetical order, covers a broad selection of subjects and those available include the digital archive.  http://0infoweb.newsbank.com.helin.uri.edu.  America’s Historical Newspapers http://0-proquest.safaribooksonline.com.helin.uri.edu/Safari Tech Books Online just to name a few. The trials expire on February 28 or March 15 depending on the database, so if you need to get a jump on a project before spring break check them out. You can also access the full list of trial databases by clicking on the HELIN Trial Databases link on the library’s homepage http://www.providence.edu/Academics/Phillips+Memorial+Library/

These are available on their website:  http://www.seminars.apple.com/Seminars.   The online seminars are free, although you do need to register. The page also includes links to a variety of other fee-based training resources and other Apple events. Library Commons Open House: Raffle Winners

Posted by Chris Day on February 16, 2007

Library Commons Open House

Despite the weather and early closing hours the Library Commons Open House this past Wednesday went very well. We were happy to welcome students, staff and faculty members, and visitors from other local libraries who stopped by for a quick tour, some refreshments, and demonstrations of our new technology rich library+commons.  We held a slightly reduced raffle with two iTunes Gift Certificates for prizes. I am proud to announce that Casey Hoffman and Allie Spivack were our winners. Both have been contacted via email and they can stop by the Digital Services Lab to pick up their prizes.
We’ll have more information and photos from the event soon. We also hope to have more events and training sessions throughout the term, and will post information here and on the library web site as it is available.

Library Love…Australian Style

Posted by Beatrice Pulliam on February 9, 2007

Book Love

February 14 is Library Lovers Day

The major library associations in Australia have proclaimed February 14 to be Library Lover’s Day

To commemorate the occasion, I searched the Literature Online (LION) database for poems with “library” in the title. Use LION to search for poetry, literary criticism and more. To give LION a try, just type “Literature Online” into the search-box on the main page of the library catalog and follow the links. In the meantime, here is a declaration of love for libraries by a notable poet, Emily Dickinson.

In A Library

A precious, mouldering pleasure ‘t is
To meet an antique book,
In just the dress his century wore;
A privilege, I think,

His venerable hand to take,
And warming in our own,
A passage back, or two, to make
To times when he was young.
His quaint opinions to inspect,
His knowledge to unfold
On what concerns our mutual mind,
The literature of old;
What interested scholars most,
What competitions ran
When Plato was a certainty.
And Sophocles a man;
When Sappho was a living girl,
And Beatrice wore
The gown that Dante deified.
Facts, centuries before,
He traverses familiar,
As one should come to town
And tell you all your dreams were true;
He lived where dreams were sown.
His presence is enchantment,
You beg him not to go;
Old volumes shake their vellum heads
And tantalize, just so.
